Men and women can experience sexual difficulties at any age. Sexual problems can also occur at any stage of a couple’s intimate relationship. The causes of sexual difficulties are highly varied. They can include medical or psychological conditions and sometimes a combination of both. It is important to remember that sexual difficulties can also be very persistent over time and may progressively worsen if action isn’t taken. The impact on the individual man or woman experiencing sexual difficulties can be highly distressing and can negatively influence the couple’s quality of intimacy as well as result in misunderstandings and conflict.
Potential medical causes are firstly investigated if patients are experiencing sexual difficulties. Conditions including Diabetes, high blood pressure and certain types of medications can have a significant impact on sexual functioning. If physical causes to sexual difficulties can’t be identified then a psychologist with clinical expertise in the assessment and diagnosis of psychologically oriented sexual difficulties may be essential for the patient’s ongoing treatment. If the sexual difficulty does have a physical cause, then it can still be helpful to talk with a psychologist who specialises in the treatment of organic (i.e., physiologically caused) sexual dysfunction to minimise it’s impact on the quality of the clients intimate life.
